New packaging centre for car components of VW
- New location for packaging centre in Jade-Weser-Port agreed
- Car components for Audi, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to be packaged in Wilhelmshaven
- Reaction to growing demand from overseas markets
- More than 12,000 containers per year to be shipped to 15 countries overseas
Wolfsburg, 30 January – the decision has been reached: car components for the Volkswagen Group to be packaged at Jade-Weser-Port in Wilhelmshaven from 2019 ready for transport to countries including Mexico, China and the USA. The new packaging centre is the Volkswagen Group’s reaction to the growing demand for vehicles overseas. This also means that more components – such as headlights, audio systems and steering wheels – need to be exported to the local production operations. The Volkswagen Group has chosen a new location at Jade-Weser-Port to handle these new packaging volumes.
Thomas Zernechel, Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics, says: “The decision in favour of the location in Wilhelmshaven is of strategic importance for the Volkswagen Group. Jade-Weser-Port is the only deep sea port in Germany. With a packaging location at this site, we benefit from a direct connection to a port from where our components can be shipped overseas in the world’s biggest ships.” Car components for the Audi, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle brands will be packaged in Wilhelmshaven and then transported overseas to over 25 locations in 15 countries.
The new packaging centre will be built on a 100,000 m² plot directly at Jade-Weser-Port. The complex will consist of four big sheds with a total floor space of more than 40,000 m2. Around 7,000 different car components for the Audi, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle brands will be supplied to Wilhelmshaven every week and packed into 250 containers. This corresponds to more than 12,000 containers (40’ high cube) per year. The new packaging centre is to be constructed by a private investor. Construction is scheduled to start this year. The packaging operations are set to begin in 2019, and will be operated by a logistics service provider.
